Oregon made a constitutional promise: lands like the Elliott State Forest must fund public schools forever.
Today, that promise is being betrayed.
Due to political mismanagement and the recent "theft" of the 82,000-acre Elliott Forest, Oregon schools are losing an estimated $40 million every year. Worse, the Common School Fund is now forced to pay $1.5 million annually just to maintain the mismanaged Common School Forest Lands.
Our children are paying the price for political deals.
OASTL, along with parents, students, and school districts, is taking legal action (detailed in Oregon's Constitutional Duties to Schools and launching a statewide campaign to restore this inheritance. Our goal is clear: Reverse the Elliott transfer and ensure the state honors its constitutional duty--not just with the Elliott State Forest, but also with all other Common School Forest Lands. But legal challenges against the state's taxpayer-funded attorneys require resources.
OASTL is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) organization. Our board members receive no compensation. Your tax-deductible donation directly funds our legal efforts, public awareness campaign, and advocacy—not overhead.
"The court understands why plaintiffs would be frustrated. The Oregon legislature consistently underfunds public education... while at the same time it works hand in glove with leaders of our state's executive branch to create new and innovative ways to end timber harvesting on lands capable of generating millions and millions of dollars for the benefit of Oregon schoolchildren."
— Judge Andrew Combs, Coos County Circuit Court (Oregon's Constitutional Duties to Schools, p. 50)
